What is a Breast Augmentation?
A breast augmentation, also called a boob job, is the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure. This treatment is designed to enlarge the breasts and create a more shapely figure while maintaining the natural look and feel of the breasts. Breast augmentations are typically performed using breast implants, which allow each patient to entirely customize their results.
What Are Breast Implants?
Breast implants are used in the majority of breast augmentations. These implants are made with materials that mimic the natural look and feel of the breasts, most often saline or silicone. While both implants offer a natural feel, each comes with its own unique characteristics that may be better suited for some than others. During your consultation, Dr. Wassermann will help determine the best option for you based on your cosmetic goals.
How Much Does a Breast Augmentation Cost?
The cost of your breast augmentation will vary depending on your specific treatment goals. To determine the exact cost of treatment, we invite you to schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Wassermann. During your consultation, you will work with Dr. Wassermann to develop a personalized treatment plan that will satisfy your unique cosmetic goals. At this point, we will be able to provide you with the full cost of treatment. To help make our treatments accessible to those who need them, we accept a variety of payment options as well as financing.
How Are Breast Implants Administered?
Dr. Wassermann works with each woman to develop a personalized treatment plan based on her unique goals. Careful consideration is put into pre-operative choices such as implant type and size (shaped, silicone, or saline), incision location, and implant placement (above or below muscle) to ensure maximum satisfaction with the breast augmentation procedure.
Dr. Wassermann discusses an “implant” range with patients during their consultation, as an implant that is tried on during a consult can look very different from an implant when placed in the patient. Dr. Wassermann is one of the very few surgeons in the state who uses sizers during consultations, which are intended for use in the OR to get a most accurate understanding of the size and are based on the base diameter and projection of the implant. When discussing post-operative results, it is important to understand that there are many outside factors that can affect post-operative results such as weight-loss and weight gain, stretch marks and various other outside factors.
Implant Type
- Moderate profile implants can be used to achieve the most natural shape and appearance with a broader base. High profile implants create forward projection for a given breast width, producing more upper pole fullness and allowing for the correction of some ptosis and sagging. Dr. Wassermann uses either saline or silicone gel-filled implants depending on the patient’s anatomy or preferences. The size of the implant, whether moderate or high profile, will also influence the final result.
Incision Location
- Breast augmentation at our South Carolina center may be performed through inframammary fold (breast crease), periareolar (around the areola), or transaxillary (through the underarm) incisions. The incision placement will influence the size and type of scarring that develops. Dr. Wassermann is one of the only plastic surgeons in Columbia who perform transaxillary endoscopic breast augmentation. This technique allows the entire procedure to be completed through a small incision hidden in the underarm.
Implant Placement
- Implants may be placed over or under the pectoralis muscle depending on personal preference and body type. Most frequently, Dr. Wassermann prefers to do breast augmentation over the muscle and under the fascia, this creates a more natural appearing breast after augmentation. There are specific benefits to both techniques, and Dr. Wassermann can help his patients determine which approach is appropriate for them.
What is Breast Revision Surgery?
Breast revision surgery is performed when a patient has undergone a previous breast augmentation and has achieved unsatisfactory results. This typically involves the removal of the current implant and the subsequent replacement of a new implant for better results. This procedure is usually performed using the incisions from the previous surgery so that patients don’t have to worry about additional scarring. To learn more, visit our page on breast revision.
What is Breast Implant Removal?
Breast implant removal is performed for women who have previously received breast implants and either no longer want them or are unhappy with their results. Most often, the implants can be removed using the incisions from the initial breast augmentation. This allows patients to avoid any additional scarring that would occur from new incisions.
What is Recovery Like Following a Breast Augmentation?
Dr. Wassermann’s extensive experience and careful treatment plans allow most breast augmentation patients at our South Carolina center to enjoy a rapid recovery and to return to non-strenuous activities in one week. After your treatment, Dr. Wassermann will give your more specific instructions regarding recovery.
